The segregation policy of a company must cover the potential for ignition or escalation of an incident.  Dangerous substances, when inappropriately stored within general storage, can significantly increase the severity of a fire and the dangers to personnel, the emergency services and the environment. In the Awareness dangerous goods course this is one of the topics.

The segregation policy of the company should be used to prevent escalation of an incident. For example, oxidising agents will greatly increase the severity of a flammable liquid fire, or the storage of packaged free-flowing flammable powder, especially stored at height, can increase the fire spread if the packaging fails from the racking. Each country have recommendations in the regulations for the segregation of dangerous substances according to their hazard classification.
